Our Story

The Journey So Far...

In 1974, five families who were planning a new church began meeting for worship in a local bank. Their first pastor, Bill McGregor, died with his family in a plane crash only three months after the church was formed. This tragedy deeply saddened the early church, but remarkably, did not slow its growth.

From the bank, the early congregation moved to Whitcomb Elementary School, where they grew quickly to 160 members. During this time, Dr. L.D. Morgan served as pastor.

In 1977, Dr. Henry Adrion III came to be the church’s pastor. During this time of growth, many people came to know Christ and expressed ministry commitments. A vision for a more permanent location began to take shape.

Our first sanctuary opened its doors at our current Middlebrook location in 1977; but the congregation could see immediately that they were outgrowing it. Planning began to add an education wing and fellowship hall.

Soon after the education wing and fellowship hall became a reality in 1980, the growing congregation, now at about 620, needed yet another building. And soon after those new building plans began in 1983, God called Dr. Adrion to the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and Dr. David Slover came to serve as pastor at UBC.

After five years of prayer and faith, the congregation walked through the doors of our current worship center in 1985. By 1986, church attendance had grown to 650, and in 1987, Dr. Robert Creech came on board as UBC’s pastor.

Almost a decade later in 1996, our congregation inaugurated our three-story educational building. And in 2009, we said goodbye to Dr. Creech, who responded to God’s call to join the faculty at Baylor.

With our current pastor, Dr. Steven Laufer, and a covenant community of a thousand people, the journey continues.
