Encountering the Christ of Joy

Encountering the Christ of Joy

Passage: John 2:1-12

Speaker: Dr. Steven Laufer

Series: Encountering Christ

Category: Sunday Sermons

Keywords: blessings, cana, joy, wedding feast

According to John, Jesus’s first miracle was at a party. It is not only significant that Jesus performed a miracle at the wedding feast, but also that he was even there at all. In much of our Gospel reading we focus in on Jesus’s teachings and his healings of the sick and disabled, but Jesus spent plenty of time celebrating. He shared meals with strangers and friends, traveled to Jerusalem for key religious holidays, and must have taken in the occasional community celebration as exemplified by this event in Cana. Like reading the Gospels, in much of our lives we only seek to experience the Christ of peace in our trouble, or hope in our despair. But the Christ of joy is there to be found in the best of life’s circumstances, since he is the giver of every good and perfect gift.
