Preschool Care Policies and Procedures
We provide teaching on Sunday mornings at 8:15, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. The teachers are volunteers and will change every hour. We try to provide consistency with the teachers from week to week. Each class will have teaching and organized activities every week, and a fifteen minute praise time in the circle area by the fish tank. The teachers will take the children outside for a little play time if weather permits.
What to Pack:
- Diaper bag labeled with your child’s name
- Disposable diapers
- Bottles, cups, formula containers labeled with your child’s name
- Pacifier, if used, labeled with your child’s name
- Extra clothes
Nursing Mothers
For your convenience, a Mother’s Room is available in the preschool area. We ask that fathers and older siblings wait outside the room while you nurse.
Bottles will only be given to babies. Please give your child’s teacher any instruction regarding your baby’s feeding time and the temperature of a formula desired. Please also bring pre-measured bottle ingredients.
Snacks
We will provide a snack of water and either goldfish crackers, pretzels, or animal crackers for every two hours of scheduled programming or childcare. The snack will be given at the 9:30 a.m. WBS hour on Sunday mornings. The four-year-old and Kindergarten classes will provide a snack during each hour. If your child has any food allergies, please remind your child’s caregiver weekly. If any other snack is offered, a sign will be posted to notify parents.
Safety & Security
- At least two adults must be present in each classroom, except in the event of an emergency or special situation
- Every volunteer has filled out an application and has had a background check within the past 24 months.
- Windows will be left uncovered so that the view into the classroom remains unobstructed
- Changing tables should be in plain sight in the classroom
- Workers are never to take a child to the bathroom alone. They will assist children only when asked
- Parents should fill out the “Child Drop-Off Stub” and be sure to include any information about the child the volunteers may need to know
- The parent should take the “Pick-Up Stub” with them and present the stub to the volunteer when picking up their child.
- Parents should use the sign-in/sign-out sheets in order to have an accurate record of which children are present in the class.
- Parents should pick up a pager for children under the age of four. The parent will be paged if the child needs assistance
Discipline We foster a sense of fun and learning, and discipline can often be handled by redirecting the child to more constructive use of time and energy. Keeping the learning environment active and fun will usually eliminate an excess need for discipline.
However, children must understand that sometimes it is necessary to listen to lessons, instructions for an activity, etc. It is important not to disrupt classroom times, because it takes away from the fun and learning of fellow preschoolers.
When discipline is necessary, all interaction will be intent to carefully consider the child’s integrity and fragility. All children will be treated with gentleness, respect, and understanding. Physical punishment will never be used.
If the classroom teacher and/or assistant are unable to control a child after repeated attempts, the child will be asked to talk with the Director of Preschool Ministries. The Director will discuss the incident with the child. Parents will be brought into the situation if needed. An incident report will be filled out for the Director, parent, and teacher to sign.
If a child uses foul language, injures other children, or does anything to affect another child in a negative way, the incident will be discussed with the child. The Director of Preschool Ministries will decide if the child will be allowed back into the classroom or if further action should be taken.
Illness & Infectious Disease In order to try to protect individuals from infectious diseases, we follow these guidelines:
- A communicable disease will be defined as an illness; a departure from health; a particular destructive process in an organism with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms that may be transmitted to others with the threat of jeopardy to their health. This may range from a common cold to the HIV/AIDS virus
- No child will be allowed into the Preschool area when he/she has any of the following symptoms:
- Has been ill during the previous 24 hours
- Has had a fever during the previous 24 hours
- Has had any symptoms of the usual childhood diseases –strep throat, croup, measles, chicken pox, pink eye, etc.
- Has an infectious skin infection including but not limited to –impetigo, ringworm, boils, etc.
- We cannot administer mediation. If you child becomes ill during a preschool session, we will remove him/her and contact you. If your child develops an infectious disease following a session, please contact the Preschool Ministries office immediately.
