The O'Bert girls arrived to a lovely English welcome on Friday, July 27th, in time to be immersed in the huge event planned at Gerrard's Cross for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony night. Several local churches, spearheaded by Goldhill Baptist church, joined forces to host over 6,000 visitors to an evening of entertainment to view the Opening Ceremony on a huge outdoors screen. This feat was accomplished with the efforts of local residents as well as 200 American volunteers. The volunteers had the opportunity to mingle with residents of neighboring towns and to witness to them as well.
Monday, July 30th, was a great opportunity to use my artistic skills in sanding down and painting a youth shelter in the park. And it turned out quite lovely! It was great fun meeting other Americans from Dallas and Missouri and South Carolina. One lady in particular shared an incredible story of God's presence in her life as she lost her husband to cancer but through her trials God presented her to her "now" husband. They are both here on their mission trip!
Tuesday, July 31st, Mike Lively presented the devotional to all the volunteers and it was inspiring as the basis of the brief message is for us to believe in God by faith and not by sight (2Cor 5:7).
Today was busy with "holiday club" the English version of VBS. I helped with a group of 8 year olds - bottom line - these 8 years are loads of fun!
For the evening event, Ruth (a local pastor's wife) from "Stop The Traffik (people shouldn't be bought & sold)" gave a very compelling presentation of her organization's efforts to stop human trafficking. You'll have to look at the web site for more information.
I look forward to God's plan for us the remainder of our stay!
God's blessings to you,
-Laura O'Bert
