My hometown: Elk City, Oklahoma
My family: My wife Jana and I have been married for almost 14 years. We also have two sons.
I accepted Christ: at the age of ten, at FBC Elk City.
My favorite character in the Bible: Is God an acceptable answer? Ok, other than God, I’ll go with Jeremiah, one of the greatest models of persistence and obedience the Bible has to offer.
The verse that is speaking to me now is: I Cor 15:10, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.” Apart from sounding like Popeye, Paul reminds me that all the qualities I have, as well as all of those I do not, were apportioned to me intentionally, and those graces that have been given to me will aid me in fulfilling God’s plan for my life and work.
On my iPod: Such a hodgepodge of music, both old and new. Some of my favorites from 2011 include albums by The Decemberists, The Black Keys, TV On The Radio, The Head and the Heart, Foo Fighters, and Death Cab For Cutie. If you're looking for something new, try Of Monsters And Men, or Dan Mangan.
I’m excited about: vacation with my family, mission opportunities that are always on the horizon, worshipping with our church family, and Oklahoma Sooner football. Not necessarily in that order.
In my free time, I: listen to a lot of music, read a variety of books and magazines, play the occasional game of tennis, volleyball, or ultimate Frisbee, play around with my kids, or go out to dinner with Jana.
Three people I would want to have a meal with: Probably good friends that live far away. But since most of you don’t know those people, I’ll go with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the head of marketing for Geico Insurance, and the Professor from Gilligan’s Island.
My education: High School in Elk City, OK; college at Oklahoma Baptist University; Masters work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Doctoral work at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. My doctoral field of study was Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew.
My favorite food is: Enchiladas. From anywhere really, but Chuy’s if you’re bringing some by the office.
My favorite TV show is: Gilligan’s Island, The Big Bang Theory, The Dan Patrick Show.
What I like about ubc: I love that UBC is a church that cares about building the Kingdom of God over building individual kingdoms to ourselves and our personal preferences.
