Lora Doremus
My hometown: I’m an Army brat, so I’ve lived all over, but I have lived more in Texas than anywhere else.
My family: Husband Bob; kids Diane, Brad and Lindsay…all students at Texas A&M University.
I accepted Christ: When I was 17 years old. My brother prayed with me to receive Jesus Christ as my Savior in his car on the side of the road on the way to our grandparents' house.
My favorite character in the Bible is: Boy that’s hard. It’s a tough choice between Joshua and Joseph — Joshua because of his incredible example of leadership, expecially following someone like MOSES! And Joseph because of his terrific humility in the face of trials.
The verse that is speaking to me now is: The entire book of Ephesians, but especially Eph. 5:8-10 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.”
On my iPod: Podcasts from Ravi Zacharias (RZIM), a brilliant Christian evangelist and apologist. He says, “I’m an evangelist and apologist because I tell you about the Lord Jesus Christ and then I apologize.” Haha (An apologist is one who speaks about and defends the Gospel of Jesus Christ.)
I’m excited about: Our new pastor and our new worship leader!
In my free time, I: Love to read, study, play with my dog Jackie and hang out with my husband and kids.
Three people I would want to have a meal with: All three of my kids at once!
My education: BA Marketing from Texas A&M University and University of Houston Clear Lake. I finished up the last of my college career in Houston after marrying my husband Bob. He was worth it.
What I like about ubc: I love the way UBC emphasizes the spiritual disciplines of Bible Study, prayer, worship, giving, and serving. There seems to be a spirit of unity and family that feels so warm and friendly.
Random life trivia: I was born in Germany on a US Army base in Munich. I lived in 12 places before I was in the second grade. We “settled down” to moving every three years until I graduated from high school. We loved it! My three kids are AWESOME! I love to make my own jewelry. My wonderful husband Bob has been working at NASA since 1985.
The team I root for is: Texas Aggies
My favorite childhood memory is: We used spend weekends on our sailboat along the Chesapeake Bay. One morning I woke up early and stuck my head up out of a hatch to see gorgeous still water, hazy fog and dozens of Canada geese all around our boat. When they noticed me they all took flight at once. It was beautiful!
If I could do it all over again, I’d: Study my freshman year of college!
My interests, hobbies or activities: Jewelry making, reading, playing with and training my dog… And I LOVE hanging out with the women of UBC!!!
My favorite food is: Black olives
My favorite TV show is: The Office, Gilmore Girls (the dialogue is great; you really have to pay attention to subtle funny things they say)
My favorite movie is: Princess Bride
My favorite book is: How To Pray by R. A. Torrey
Book I’d recommend to anyone as “a great read” (besides the Bible): River Rising by Athol Dickson
My favorite guilty pleasure is: Reading a totally absorbing book while eating a huge bowl of really salty potato chips.
If I could, I would: Travel to Prince Edward Island. I’ve wanted to ever since I saw Anne of Green Gables.
