VBS 2012: Sky! was such a success! We had 834 distinct different children register throughout the VBS week, June 11-15. Our highest day saw 850 people on campus, which included 250 volunteers. Think of the effect UBC had on all of these families!
On Monday, our Bible Point was “No matter who you are…TRUST GOD!” We talked about a Roman officer having faith in Jesus and thanked God that “People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7).
On Tuesday, we learned that “No matter how you feel…TRUST GOD!” We shared the story of Jesus bringing Lazarus back to life and shared with one another, “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God.” (John 14:1).
On Wednesday, we saw Jesus arrested and put on trial. We discovered that “No matter what people do…TRUST GOD!” and that “those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31).
Thursday was such a pivotal day. We found out that “No matter what happens…TRUST GOD!” and heard the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We praised God that “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38).
We finished the week with “No matter where you are…TRUST GOD!” and the story of Jesus making a beachside breakfast for his friends. We learned to “Be strong and courageous. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9).
The children had an opportunity to share what they learned with their parents and the congregation on VBS Sunday, June 17, as they offered their songs, testimonies and prayers to God for all He has done. What a sweet time!
Throughout the week, our mission focus was Love Africa. Kyle Wilson, Director of Student Ministries, shared with the children about his upcoming mission trip with the teen group. He talked with the children about the after-school programs he and his team would be visiting and about the children they would be working with. We even had the opportunity to Skype with our new Africa friends! Kyle explained that their biggest need was the funds to help pay the salaries of their workers. Many groups who come in are willing to purchase food or clothing for the children, but their operations could not run without their employees. Our UBC kids wanted to get involved with Mr. Kyle’s mission, and they raised $3,233.99 to help pay the salaries of three precious workers.
We could not have done all of this without the scores of volunteers who spent months preparing for VBS and who stepped up each day during VBS week. Some came all week, some came for a day or two…but they all had an impact on God’s Kingdom. I am in awe of how God works…and how His plans are so much bigger than mine. From the number of children with whom we had the opportunity to minister, to the tremendous amount of pennies and nickels the children were able to raise for other children in need, I am truly humbled by what God can do, if we follow His lead. -- Laura Davis, VBS Co-Director
