Music and Drama Camp was another highlight of our summer. We had 67 kids participate in the week with Ms. Cora Lea Burns of Harlingen, TX leading them. Our own Jim Smith, Audra Smith, Shauna Garrison and several high school students assisted Ms. Burns. Our kids worked their hearts out on learning and memorizing the musical, First Action Heroes. Kids learned a lot more than just music at music camp! Speaking parts included Captain Super, the Bible Boy Wonder, David, Esther, Joseph, and Joshua and each of them emerged as heroes helping kids understand how God wants them to react to bullies. During the week, our kids were introduced to the very first action hero—Jesus Christ, who aids, guides and comforts them as they encounter the “Goliaths” in their lives. All of this was done in a comic book theme with upbeat rockin’ songs and speaking parts.

Each day they would rotate through stations learning music, choreography, drama, games and bible stories that would support the songs they were learning. They were also challenged to memorize 11 scripture verses, including Psalm 8:1-9 and Psalm 150:1-6. As you can see, some of these verses were extremely LONG! And FIVE KIDS met the challenge and memorized ALL 11 VERSES! Even as I am writing this article, my assistant Linda Goodale shared with me that her daughter Mandi, who participated in Music Camp was reading these verses last night (one month later) in bed!

It was such a blessing to see all of the hard work culminate with two amazing presentations during the Sunday morning services. Many of the kids who participated in the camp do not attend church and it was encouraging to see their families attend on Sunday to watch their kids present First Action Heroes!
