Following Jesus in discipleship is the great adventure of life. It takes us places physically, emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually we would never have ventured on our own. Following Jesus requires a "radical" commitment of our lives. Radical does not mean wild or uncontrolled. It refers to the root of a matter. (You mathematicians will remember that the sign for finding the "root" of a number is called a "radical.") Radical discipleship is a following of Christ that strikes at the root of our lives, the place where we are grounded, the place where we draw our sustenance, the place that connects our lives to the soil of God's grace and power. Radical discipleship requires us to think differently, to trust differently, to know God's power, to exercise faith, and to lay down our lives for something bigger than ourselves. For a few weeks in June and July we will explore radical discipleship by following Christ through the pages of Mark's gospel. We'll get to the root of our calling to follow.
